Laboratories of the state institution National Center for Analytical Monitoring in the Area of Environmental Protection perform hydrochemical monitoring of surface water in transboundary parts of water bodies in the basins of the rivers Zapadnaya Dvina, Neman, Zapadnaya Bug, Dnieper, and Pripyat as part of the National Environmental Monitoring System of the Republic of Belarus and in compliance with bilateral international agreements on protection and rational use of transboundary waters.
The points of observation over the status of surface waters, parameters and frequency of checks are spelled out in executive order No. 44-OD of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus of 30 January 2015 on the organization of monitoring the surface and underground waters in the points of observation under the Belarusian National Environmental Monitoring System.
The transboundary monitoring system comprises 31 surface water observation points located on the border with the Russian Federation, the Republic of Poland, Ukraine, the Republic of Lithuania, and the Republic of Latvia. The transboundary monitoring points collect water samples monthly. Water quality is assessed across 29 hydrochemical parameters such as physical characteristics and gas content, concentrations of biogenic and organic substances and metals.
The results of hydrochemical monitoring of surface waters are sent to the information and analytical center of surface water monitoring of the Belarusian National Environmental Monitoring System according to the established procedure.
Laboratories of the state institution National Center for Analytical Monitoring in the Area of Environmental Protection regularly confirm their technical competence and demonstrate a high level of measurement comparability through interlaboratory comparisons conducted in cooperation with laboratories of neighboring countries, which contributes to mutual recognition of the results obtained by laboratories of different countries within the national monitoring system.
